THE BRITISH HANOVERIAN HORSE SOCIETY
Congratulations on having chosen a Hanoverian Stallion
for your mare. The Society issues pedigree certificates for
all progeny of licensed stallions and these are bound into
a passport compliant with 2005 requirements. So you will
have everything you need to compete in young horses classes.
This year is the second year that passports are compulsory
for all horses and the decision which studbook issues the
passport is not reversible. For instance if you went to The
Pleasure Horse Society your passport would be stamped "no
known breeding", you could not then opt into a society
that could record the breeding when known.
Foal I.D's.
The legislation says that the I.D has to be filled
in by a Vet. Or properly authorized person and the officers
appointed
by the Society come under that heading. The F.E.I. is the
body that requires Vets. To fill in the I.D. but this will
apply to very few horses. Please find enclosed a foal I.D.
which you can get your Vet.to fill in on one of his regular
visits or it can be filled in by one of the Societies appointed
persons who include Ted Green, Clem Somerset, Katy Holder-Vale
and Andrea Hobbs, more persons can be appointed if they
apply to the society. For all foals send the I.D. with a
covering
letter giving the name and address of the breeder or owner
if they are different from the details on the covering
certifcate, at the latest include the I.D. with your show
entry form
which will be available on request or download from the
website. Also look in the members guide for how to show and
studbook
guidelines. Please ask your Vet not to put M down for sex
as this is confusing, please use Male or Female as these
are the terms requested by the NED.
Branding is carried out at the show on the Saturday night
with a special discount for £50 inc.passport, at the
regional show the charge is £75 and this includes the
cost of passports and ID. Mares have to be registered for
the covering year or the year of the foal’s birth.
If the mare is new to the society enclose photocopy of her
pedigree with entry form, mares have to be graded into the
studbook for the foal to be branded.
DNA
The charge for the DNA will be £17 per animal and
you will appreciate that the Animal Health Trust charge £44
so that you see we have managed to get you a very good price
like all good retailers with the BHHS you get 2 for the price
of 1.
It is necessary to DNA as there are many people doing A.I
and it is inevitable that mistakes will be made and as the
Society warrants the pedigree we must protect the Society
by this action.
For part bred mares send your foal ID to the above address
with a cheque for £35. Please supply any details of
the mare’s pedigree which you wish to be included on
the pedigree certificate to comply with the new NED requirements,
please note we can only accept pedigrees from a recognized
breed society. Please start the name of your horse with the
first letter of the stallions name. The Society will not
accept prefixes but prefixes can be added for competition
purposes but E.U. legislation say that the original name
must remain on the passport. Please put a telephone number
on all correspondence.
The Society will accept covering certificates
issued by other breed societies for our licensed stallions.
For imported
semen please send copies of any import documents or Export
Veterinarian certificate. It is important to realize that
passports cannot be rescinded if you chose the wrong PIO
in the first place and only the breed society of origin can
put breeding details on the National Equine Database known
as NED.
Remember to bring your passports to the show as it is a
legal requirement that registered horses must be accompanied
by their passports when they are moved.
Owners of mares which have not been graded will have to
get the mares graded before the foals are branded this can
be done at the annual show or regional shows. With German
passports the grading stamp is on page 13, also it will say
if the horse was given a name at that time as this may not
be on the pedigree certificate. Show entry forms will be
available on the website.
Thoroughbred mares registered at Weatherbys G.S.B. are
eligible for grading and the foals would be branded when
covered by a foal branded Hanoverian stallion, some other
breeding populations with 50% Hanoverian blood are also accepted,
please contact Katy Holder-Vale on 01353777078 for any advice.
A few comments on the new passport legislation
This will not be pro actively enforced by Trading Standards
or the Office of Fair Trading but will be enforced at Auctions,
Slaughter Houses and when complaints are received in complaints
under the sale of goods Act. DEFRA are well aware that we
cannot issue passports until after branding and will not
enforce the time limits under the legislation in those cases.
The National Equine Database (NED) is in two parts, there
is the legal requirements of NED and the voluntary information
on pedigree and performance which the breed societies provide.
We have provided that information but many organizations
have not. If not enough organizations do not provide that
information then the NED will be a DEFRA database only and
there will be no public access to it. So make sure that any
organizations that you belong to show a commitment to provide
that information, or the opportunity will be lost. Many pony
and horse societies have not shown that commitment and the
deadline is now very close.
You are reminded that you only have to carry a passport
for the specified purposes and they are competitions, breeding, export
and slaughter.
All organizations are expected to overstamp passports where
horses have multiple society registrations and the old practice
of issuing extra documents has now ceased.
PASSPORTS WILL HAVE TO BE LEFT WITH STUD
You will have to leave the passport with the stud as they
may need them for vet treatment. Once the foal has been weaned
it must have its passport with it.
