The British Hanoverian Horse Society

The time of year has arrived when we can look back and ponder over our successes and some instances our failures. Our society has indeed been a success with ever increasing mare and foal registrations and numerous new stallions being used for the first time. Spring and a new foaling season will soon be upon us so I ask you to consider your requirements for your foal registrations. Please notify us of the foals arrival and when you send in covering certificates please include the dam’s pedigree if it is a recent import, forward to the secretary’s office within 1 month of birth and any requests for home branding be made early so that arrangements can be made to endeavor to meet your wishes. The officials of the society do their utmost to ensure its effectiveness, but do need members’ full co-operation. The 2007 show will be at Addington on September 22nd and 23rd and will show some alterations. The AGM will take place at ? on 18th? March pm this will be preceded by an address and demonstration by Dr L. Christmann of the Verband on the current Rule changes, use of potential Bloodlines and a practical demo on showing in hand. Please support this; it is for your benefit. Further information available later. May I wish you all the best for 2007 and hope you have the best year yet.
Sincerely

Ted Green - Chairman

Foals 2006.
Most foal passports have been completed and if you have not received one please send us an email.
Foals 2007.
Please send in the postcard as soon as possible after the birth of the foal and when you return the covering certificate make sure that the dam details are correct according to her passport. German numbers are DE 331 for Hanoverians in the UK we use 276331 the numeric UELN. Please use proper names not stable names and full numbers.
Foals 2008.
If you are planning to cover a mare please send in your membership renewal as soon as possible so we can record that in our system. It is very important if you plan to use your own vet, as many do not realize the importance of obtaining a breed society passport with verified breeding information.
Newsletters. Cleo had her laptop stolen so some people who renewed membership at the show may not have received newsletters.

Animal welfare transport certificates.
From Jan 07 moving animals more than 65 km requires a certificate from the State Vet Service. This is free and lasts 5 years. Download from DEFRA website.

The National Equine Database.
The public unveiling of this site has again been delayed and this is in line with most Government computer projects. The exact reasons for the deferral are not clear; the following is an extract from a letter from NED.
“ Momenta – our database supplier – released what is known as the Phase1b system to User Acceptance Testing (UAT) on 28 November as planned. However, this has identified some issues that are causing concern and which need to be fixed. Remedial steps are being taken and we have some confidence that this aspect of UAT will be complete before Christmas. The Phase 3 aspects of the NED database were also due to be released to UAT last week. Some of you will have seen some of this being demonstrated at Stoneleigh on 17th October. However this element of the system was not ready to be handed over to UAT. Here too there are some issues which need to be addressed before UAT can commence. These issues prevent the full system being ready for Beta testing to commence on the original target date. NED, Defra and Momenta (the database supplier) are working to address and correct the problems that have been identified, and it is envisaged that the new target date to commence Beta testing will be in early 2007. “
It is worth noting that the German National System run by VIT was upgraded in 2000 and could have been bought off the shelf along with the TORIS show results data collection which collects data of all horse competing in 70000 shows in German.
VIT Database.
I am in the process of finalizing read only access to the German national system and this will enable us to see competition and breeding data for all horses on the system.
British Breeding.
There is a meeting in January with the BEF and sportshorse breed societies to map out the future for British breeding under the Action Plan of the BHIC plan for the Equine Industry.

John Shenfield: Secretary

The Curious case of Red Baron.

Zara Phillips is competing a horse called Red Baron and it was indicated that the horse was by Medoc/Maat/ Goldfinger and it had been issued with a passport by the Irish Showjumping Association as a horse of no known breeding. And I decided to find out if I could what the dam line was. The covering certificates showed that no semen had been exported to Ireland for the year of 1995 when the dam was covered so clearly it was foaled in the UK. I established that the horse had been registered in Ireland by an event rider called Jane Tiffin with the Irish Showjumping Association in 2001 but the telephone directory gave no number in the county Kildare region for that person and so the trail was cold. James Walker the current owner of Medoc had come up with a similar problems. I contacted Howard Rose who brought Medoc to the UK and he had heard nothing of a horse going to Ireland.
Then the story takes a strange twist. Howard Rose’s wife Val was going to the Horse of the Year Show on a coach to see the Lippizaners and was discussing this with the person sitting next to her, when someone said “I know all about that horse it was bred by Ros Broadbank and Jane Tiffin came to see her with photographs of the horse and enquired about other progeny from the same bloodlines”. It appeared that when Ros Broadbank tried to get further information from Jane Tiffin and the Gledhill Stud the current owners she was unsuccessful.
I then got out our records to see that we had issued a passport for this Horse in 1996 and we had the Vet. ID and part of the dam’s pedigree, which showed it was approximately 75% Hanoverian and the dam had documentation from Sports Horse GB.
The dam was Lucinda II 4759 HIS and the dam’s sire was Luciano/ Lukas/Wicht .
The horse had a BHD number 34634 and the Hanoverian GB number 18032996. The horse had an I.D. done by a vet. in 1996.
